31st Jan | Flat Pack

When you hear the words “flat pack furniture,” what comes to mind? For most people, it’s flimsy bookcases, confusing instructions, and that dreaded “wobble” after you assemble it.

In the world of professional exhibitions and retail, “wobble” isn’t just annoying—it’s dangerous. When you are displaying a £5,000 bronze sculpture, a heavy industrial prototype, or a high-end bicycle, you need a pedestal that feels as solid as the floor itself.

Usually, that means buying a fully assembled, glued, and bulky plinth that requires a van to transport.

But at Exhibition Plinths, we asked a different question: Can we build a plinth that packs into a car boot but is strong enough to hold a vehicle?

The answer is yes. And we have the photos to prove it.

The Challenge: The 200kg Stress Test

We didn’t just want to claim our tool-free plinths were “heavy duty.” We wanted to prove it.

We took one of our Flat Pack Display Plinths—the exact same style we ship to galleries and pop-up shops—and we parked a 200kg Motorbike on top of it.

The result? Zero movement. No bowing, no swaying, and absolutely no collapse. The plinth remained perfectly square and rigid, supporting the bike with ease.

The Secret: How is it this strong?

You might be wondering how a box held together with clips can support a motorcycle. It comes down to three specific engineering choices we made that separate our plinths from budget alternatives:

1. Material Thickness Matters

Most budget flat-pack furniture uses 12mm or even 10mm chipboard. We use High-Grade 18mm MDF for every single panel. This is architectural-grade material that creates a thick, robust wall capable of transferring vertical load directly to the floor.

2. The Interlocking Grid

Our plinths consist of 5 pieces: 4 sides and a top. When assembled, the panels interlock to create a structural grid. The weight of the object (in this case, the motorbike) is distributed evenly down the vertical panels. Because the panels are 18mm thick, they don’t buckle under compression.

3. The Locking System

We use specialized heavy-duty internal clips. These aren’t your standard wooden dowels. When you push the panels together, the clips engage with a satisfying “snap,” locking the unit into a perfect 90-degree square. This prevents the “parallelogram effect” (swaying side-to-side) that plagues cheaper pedestals.

Why This Matters for Your Display

You might not be displaying a motorbike. Maybe you are displaying:

  • High-End Bicycles: We are a trusted supplier for Canyon Bicycles, providing plinths for their road and mountain bikes.
  • Heavy Sculptures: Bronze, stone, or marble pieces that require absolute stability.
  • Ceramics & Glass: Where even a tiny vibration could cause a disaster.

With our design, you get the best of both worlds. You get the strength of a permanent museum cabinet, with the logistics of a flat-pack.

The Logistics Advantage

The biggest cost at a trade show isn’t always the stand space—it’s the logistics. Shipping fully assembled furniture requires pallets, vans, and large storage units.

Our Heavy Duty Flat Pack Plinths break down to less than 100mm high.

  • Transport: Fit 10 plinths in the back of an estate car.
  • Storage: Slide them onto a rack or into a cupboard when the event is over.
  • Assembly: Build them in <2 minutes. No tools. No screws. No hassle.

Conclusion: Don’t Compromise on Safety

You no longer have to choose between a “portable” plinth and a “strong” plinth. As our motorbike test proves, you can have both.

Whether you need a Standard White Spray Finish for a gallery or a Raw MDF version to paint yourself, our modular system is ready for the heavy lifting.
